Air conditioning and refrigeration systems are responsible for toasty dens in the winter and perfectly chilled cars in the heat of summer. The very fact that so many people live in sweltering places like Phoenix and Vegas is a testament to the longevity of the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Air conditioning and refrigeration techs are often called HVAC techs and they install, maintain and repair heating and cooling systems in a variety of settings, whether it be a home, a hospital, an office or a giant industrial plant.
Study includes temperature control, electronics, equipment design and construction, maintenance, and repair. After taking classes and completing and apprenticeship, students take the state exam to get their license. The great thing about the field is that as demand for residential and commercial development grows, so will job opportunities for HVAC techs. Since HVAC technicians work face to face with the public, communication skills are valuable. Related areas of study include electrician, welding, plumbing, home inspection training, and construction management.
